What is the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program?
Purpose
The US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program was formed in 1977 to identify a pool of players in each age group from which a National Team will be selected for international competition; to provide high-level training to benefit and enhance the development of players at all levels; and, through the use of carefully selected and licensed coaches, develop a mechanism for the exchange of ideas and curriculum to improve all levels of coaching.
Program Description History
In 1979, the program expanded, the organization became more efficient and multi-year plans were developed. State Associations were encouraged to develop programs which supported and worked in tandem with National and Regional programs. At the beginning of 1982 a formalized program for girls was created, with the addition of a full committee (one member from each region). In 2017, the Northern Nevada ODP Program was approved and introduced to serve Northern Nevada and its surrounding areas.
Tryouts
Tryouts are held mid-summer. Typically there are two tryout weekends and, while attendance to both is not required, it is heavily recommended. Registration for tryouts opens in the spring.
Travel Team
The ODP travel team will be chosen at the beginning of November and have two additional training/friendly matches between November and December. The schedule of trainings and games will be published as the fields become available. Once invited to the travel team, the player must be registered and paid for in GotSoccer.
ODP West Championships
In January, the travel teams will head down to Phoenix, Arizona to compete in the ODP West Championships where they will play against the other 13 states in the region and be scouted for the regional pool team.
ODP Pool
The ODP Pool is the group of players selected by the coaches to participate in the NYSA ODP system. The list will be announced and remain posted for the seasonal year on our website. Once invited to the pool, the player must be registered and paid for in GotSoccer. Multiple training sessions, spread across August through November, are included in the registration fee along with one training top. We expect players to remain in financial good standing with the program at all times.
Regional Team
If a player is identified during the Regional Championships they will be invited to participate in the West Region pool team. The pool team will be used to create a regional team competing on a national level.
Why ODP?
The ODP provides international and domestic competition, regional events, monitoring/tracking, and exposure to high-level coaching.
